Training the next generation

Harry’s Ramblings: Training the Next Generation of Plumbers

Welcome back to Harry’s Ramblings, the blog where we take plumbing and gas as seriously as a clogged drain but with a wink and a grin!

Today, let’s chat about something that tugs at my heartstrings—our future plumbers and the remarkable apprentices stepping up to fill the boots of us old-timers. As I sit here reminiscing about my wild journey—from the vibrant streets of Zimbabwe to the sun-soaked shores of Greece (and yes, that unforgettable moment when I nervously got down on one and proposed to Trace)—I can’t help but marvel at how much has changed, including my ability to remember where I left my keys!

Now, let’s get real for a moment: many of our “old school” plumbers are hanging up their wrenches and contemplating retirement. This leaves a gaping hole in our industry, one that statistics from Master Plumbers and the Plumbing and Gasfitting Development Board (PGDB) have done little to sugarcoat. We’re facing an aging workforce and a potential skills shortage that could rival my old toolbox—rusty and in desperate need of attention!

And let’s not forget the infamous “brain drain.” Young, ambitious tradies are packing their bags for greener pastures overseas, looking for their slice of the good life. But we’ve got something special to offer right here! Plumbing isn’t just a job; it’s a fulfilling career that needs fresh talent to keep the wheels turning—preferably not in circles, like my morning routine!

Training the next generation isn’t just a box to check; it’s a legacy we’re building together. Every time I watch our apprentices tackle a new challenge, it hits me: we’re not just teaching them to fix leaky taps; we’re preparing them to become the legends of tomorrow. Besides, it’s a pretty good distraction from my own back pains!

The Waihanga Ara Rau initiative is crucial in shaping the future of trades in New Zealand. We're not just filling vacancies; we’re creating a skilled workforce ready to take on whatever the future throws our way—even if that includes an eternity of trying to explain how to use a wrench and drainage gradient!

At Waterworx, we’re fully committed to equipping our apprentices—like the fantastic trio of Adam, Tyla, and Abhi—with the training and mentorship they need to succeed. Their success isn’t just a feather in our cap; it's a shining example of what our industry can achieve when we work together.

So, here’s to keeping the plumbing tradition alive! Let’s show our youth the immense value in skilled trades and inspire their journey into this rewarding field. With a little bit of grit, a dash of humor, and plenty of guidance, we can ensure our work continues impacting lives long after we’ve hung up our wrenches (hopefully just for a nap)!

Until next time, keep those pipes flowing and those dreams alive!
